Summer bedding
31. May 2022

Summer bedding can help you keep you cool in bed even in the warmest season. While we love fluffy down feathers in winter, bedding in summer makes us happy with light, cooling materials. Colorful or floral patterns visually provide the summer-sun-beach feeling, so we can enjoy the hot season with all our senses. Below, you will find our best tips on how to find the right summer bedding for your needs and what you should look for when making your purchase decision.

How does summer bedding affect your sleeping climate?

SommerbettwäscheWhen it feels like a sauna in our bedrooms at the height of summer, many people find it much harder to fall asleep. But you can do a few things to change your sleeping climate for the better. Special summer bedding ensures that you do not have to deal with any unpleasant heat buildup under your blanket, because the fabrics regulate heat and have a cooling effect. That way, they prevent the sleeping temperature from getting too high even in summer, and you can enjoy sweet dreams. Visually, the bedding also spreads a summer feeling because they are often kept in bright colors or decorated with floral patterns or vacation motifs. Colors like white and beige convey a feeling of lightheartedness and freshness. When it comes to summer bedding, it is best to stick to subtle colors and instead set highlights with decorative pillows in bold shades of blue or green. The advantage: These colors provide a visual cooling effect. Colors like yellow, orange or red, on the other hand, have a warming effect.

What materials are suitable for summer bedding?

SommerbettwäscheDue to their cooling and breathable properties, some textiles are particularly suitable for the summer bedding.

Satin
One of the most popular materials, for example, is satin. This finely woven cotton yarn, which is processed into a dense fabric, feels wonderful on the skin. Moreover, satin bedding is beautifully smooth and shiny, so it also looks very noble.

Mako Satin
Bedding made of mako satin is also particularly recommended for the summer. This fine cotton satin is made exclusively from Egyptian cotton and feels pleasantly cool against the skin thanks to its firmer, smoother structure.

Linen
Another popular fabric – that you probably know from your summer wardrobe – is linen. The wonderfully light and cool material absorbs moisture well and transports it away from the body. The breathable linen fiber is also very tear-resistant and sturdy, which means that you can rely on long-lasting bedding that will last you for many summers to come.

Seersucker
Seersucker bedding is also a classic for warm nights. This is because the fabric, which is mostly made of cotton, is characterized by its special way of making. The fact that the threads are woven in a special way creates a crepe-like surface. This makes seersucker ideal for the summer bedding, because the wavy fabric structure does not lie directly on the skin and allows improved air circulation. In addition to the high breathability, the material also has another advantage: Due to the crepe-like structure, it is non-iron, so you can save a lot of time with seersucker bedding.

Jersey
Jersey is often used for bedding, as it is an elastic and easy-care fabric. The material feels pleasant on the skin and is breathable. Therefore, jersey is suitable not only for summer bedding, but is also used for all-season bedding.

How to properly care for your summer bedding

After a day in the sun, it is best to relax in a clean bed. Especially when the temperatures are high and we sweat, we long for a light and clean feeling in bed. In the summer, it is a good idea to change your bedding more often than the recommended 2-week cycle. After all, they absorb more liquid in the hot season than in winter. If you are one of those people who sweat quickly at night, it may be worth changing your bedding once a week.

The right care for your summer bedding depends, above all, on the material you choose. Fabrics such as cotton jersey, for example, can be washed at high temperatures of up to 60°C without any problems. Seersucker and satin, on the other hand, should not be washed at temperatures above 40°C. If you have chosen a summer bedding with a particularly colorful design, the use of a special color detergent will help your bedding look good longer and the colors will not fade as quickly. Especially in summer, remember to let your mattress "breathe" as well. In other words, pull back the covers after getting up and air out the bedroom so that fresh air can circulate through the mattress.

You should consider these criteria when buying summer bedding

In order to choose summer bedding that you will enjoy for a long time, there are a few criteria to consider aside from the quality of material and fabrication. First of all, you should pay attention to an air-permeable material, so that no heat gathers under the blanket. Due to the way it is made, seersucker, for example, provides excellent air circulation. Since we sweat more in the summer, the fabric for your summer bedding should also be able to transport moisture away from your body. The third criterion is the weight of your blanket. While we like to snuggle up in the winter and find a heavy blanket comfortable, we want just the opposite in the summer. The linen fiber is particularly well-suited here. Lastly, the chosen material should have a cooling effect so that you can enjoy a relaxing sleeping climate in the summer as well. Mako satin has a smooth texture that creates a pleasant cooling effect on our skin.
