If you want to improve the quality of your sleep quickly, you should pay more attention to the humidity in your bedroom. If it is too high or too low, meaning the air in the room is too humid or too dry, not only your room climate will suffer but your well-being, too. We will tell you how you can regulate the humidity in your bedroom and achieve an all-round restful sleep experience, so that you can enjoy healthy sleep in the future.

What affects the humidity in the bedroom?

Have you ever thought about why humidity in the bedroom is an important factor for restful sleep? For us to be able to relax at night, we need a sleeping environment that meets our needs. A good indoor climate in particular is essential for healthy sleep, while suboptimal sleeping temperatures can make it difficult for us to get a comfortable night's rest. If the air humidity is below a benchmark of 40 percent or above 60 percent, for example, there are unpleasant long-term consequences for your well-being. A room climate that is too humid can cause harmful mold, whereas a room climate that is too dry is associated with respiratory diseases.

But what exactly is the reason for the humidity in the bedroom changing for the worse? Unfortunately, we ourselves are often responsible for the air in the room being too humid or too dry due to incorrect airing as well as incorrect heating. In addition, structural defects such as excessively damp exterior walls can also be a problem. Sometimes, however, it is simply due to the wrong wallpaper: Some wallpapers hold the humidity and thus can only release it with difficulty.

What to do if the humidity in the bedroom is too low?

ZimmerpflanzenEspecially in winter, the air humidity may drop too low due to excessive heating. This results in extremely dry air. Since the dry air can make you more prone to respiratory diseases and thus endanger your health, you should bring it back to the optimal range by taking the right actions. In simple cases, the problem can already be solved by proper airing. The most important factor here is frequent and regular airing – even during the cold season.

Many people want to block out the icy temperatures in winter and therefore do not open their windows often enough to have a balanced climate inside. However, you should air your room once a day, even in winter despite the low temperatures and let in fresh air. If you open the bedroom windows wide in the morning, immediately after getting up, and get ready in the meantime, you will not be directly exposed to the cold and the fresh air can spread throughout in your room. After only five to ten minutes, you can close the windows again and turn up the heater a little to bring the temperature back to a more comfortable level.

One of the nicest ways to create more humidity in the bedroom is to buy houseplants. Especially plants with large leaves can release a lot of humidity into the surrounding air and thus contribute to an improved indoor climate. Because plants function not only as humidifiers but also as air purifiers, the investment is twice as worthwhile. However, if you have concerns about plants in the bedroom, you can of course also use an artificial humidifier to get a pleasant and less dry air in your room.

What to do if the humidity in the bedroom is too high?

LüftenIf the humidity in your bedroom is too high, one simple fact will tell you that. Take a look at your windows when you wake up in the morning. If they are fogged up in the morning, this is a sure sign that the humidity in your bedroom is too high. If that happens frequently and over a longer span of time it can lead to mold in your room. Since our bodies release over half a liter of fluid at night, the humidity in the room also increases while we sleep.

Especially during the summer months, the indoor climate can quickly become unstable because the more the air warms up, the more moisture it can absorb. Often, there is the added factor of you not sleeping alone in your bed, which makes frequent airing inevitable. The more animals, people, or plants are in a room, the more the humidity increases. Due to the higher humidity, you sweat even more than you normally do, and restful sleep becomes more of a challenge. But since you certainly do not want to kick your other half or your pets out of the bedroom, you should create a healthy indoor climate in a different way.

Reducing humidity

One of the easiest ways to reduce high humidity in the bedroom is to place bowls with salt in the room. Salt can absorb high amounts of humidity and is very cheap as well.
You can also prevent increased humidity in the bedroom by airing it properly. On very hot and humid days, it is a good idea to air the room once in the morning, when the temperature is still low. During the day, on the other hand, you should keep the windows closed and lower the blinds so that the room is protected against the summer heat, as a hot room temperature makes sleeping even more difficult for you.

A somewhat more complex solution of keeping humidity inside at bay is changing the wallpaper. Vinyl and fiberglass wallpaper can sometimes contribute to increased humidity, so it may be worth replacing it with a modern liquid wallpaper that can absorb humidity well. If the problem persists, you can think about investing in a dehumidifier, which filters the humidity from the air in your room.

Tips for the optimal bed climate

We often only look at the outside temperatures and the air in our bedroom when we want to optimize the indoor climate – and neglect the fact that our bedroom furniture also has an effect on the sleeping temperature in our room. A bed climate that is too humid, for example, is an ideal breeding ground for mites and bacteria. You should therefore not only freshen up your bedroom by airing it regularly, but also let your bed "breathe correctly". How do you do that? By folding back the bedspread when you get up in the morning and taking your pillows off the bed. This way the remaining humidity inside the mattress can escape and the air can circulate freely. You should also air out your mattress regularly, for example when you change your bedding.

improve the bed climate

The right additional bed components can also help you provide your mattress with enough air. A high-quality slat base, for example, is essential for the ventilation of your mattress. Our uni 12 bridge® slat base, for example, is designed for optimal air circulation and gives you weightless comfort thanks to the innovative bridge® technology.

One last tip: It's best to get yourself a temperature hygrometer that displays the temperature in the room as well as the humidity. This way you can always keep an eye on the humidity and react quickly if it is too humid or too dry in the bedroom. That way, you can enjoy the perfect sleeping climate at night – and thus improved sleep quality. Who would have thought that the humidity in your bedroom could be influenced in such a pleasant way?
